In May of 2009, Pacemakers hosted the Super Street Racing for Cancer Event which was organized by Butcher Racing and sponsored in part by Jegs. The Grand Marshall was a 21 year old young man named Joey Friend. At that time Joey had already lost a leg to cancer and was under-going chemo.
Along with the support of the Jegs racing family and Pacemakers, nearly $5,000.00 was donated to the James Cancer Hospital at the Ohio State University. In August, a spaghetti dinner benefit was held at Flappers Bar and Grill in Mount Vernon to raise money for Joey's new prosthetic leg.
For the past 4 years Joey put up a courageous battle. It saddens me to say that last night Joey lost his battle with cancer.
